I know the Mets are bidding against no one right now, but toss in another 5 million and make it 3/75. It's a good faith gesture and if he takes it, great. If not then it's time to move on. They can't have this dragging on into February.
I was thinking it might be the time for Steve Cohen to step in and say, "Here's five years at $125 million, no opt outs, no options. no fooling around. Straight deal. Take it or leave it."
That would be a VERY big deal for Pete at this point. A gift, really. The market just isn't there for him to push the numbers higher on his own. Should he not take it (leap at it, really), the organization can walk away in good conscience and say to the fans, we tried.
On the other hand, were he to grab it, all would be well. Everybody could make kissy faces and say, it's business, this is the way it goes sometimes, no hard feelings. Let's go win some ballgames together.
If Pete -- meaning Boras -- is going to hold out for a higher AAV (Miggy money -- really?) and opt outs on shorter terms so he can take the pile and take another shot at it in a year or two, then it's goodbye. And should be.
How about this: give him a 4 year, $100 million deal. Include player opt-outs after years 2 & 3. Include club options as well. Give him an extra million if he leads the league in HR’s, an extra million if he leads in RBI’s and an extra million for being in the top 3 in MVP voting. They can add all sorts of other incentives so if he stinks it doesn’t cost them a premium amount and if he’s great he gets rewarded accordingly.

I agree, and would even go a tad higher ($5M or $6M, maybe that and possibly more deferred). But that's it. Take it or leave it.

I still believe the Mets should offer Alonso more than they gave Manaea (3 years, $75 million) or at least as much. He's an everyday player.
Did the Mets mis-use Lucchesi?
