Terrible job by Stearns all day long. Would not include money to pay down bad contracts like Robert, Manea, Senga, yet sends money to Pittsburgh with the one guy who they should have held on to in Weaver. I like the prospect well enough, still should have been able to get more from the Pirates than they did. Sending Walker and Taylor for another shortstop type prospect.... I just dont buy into the Latin free agent signees anymore. That seems to boost their value more than their actual talent a lot of times.
Why would I sign a free agent contract with the Mets next year as a relief pitcher if I thought that I would be traded away to some city out of my control at the trade deadline? Weaver was excellence. They got a nothing. A single A shortstop who didn’t hit at high A at age 21.
People know the game. They know the economics. If they don't have a no-trade clause, they know this might happen. It factors in when the Mets pay them.
Decimated bullpen. How many of Holmes, Peralta, Minter, and Raley does Stearns expect to sign when they become FAs? Right now they have McLean and 5 innings of Scott and then prayers. Bullpen? What quality reliever FAs do they think they're going to sign? Basically, forget about next year, hope that in '28 some of Stearns's acquisitions come through. Hopefully, he'll be gone by then. It's a rebuild but he'll never use the word. I think Stearns's next masterstroke should be signing Polanco to an extension and see if he can get his obp over .200. How's the run-prevention thing going? Charming slogan, wasn't it?
