Mets trade Brooks Raley to the Phillies for two prospects
The Mets received the Phillies 27th ranked prospect for Raley, who can be a free agent at the end of the season
The Mets continued to unload from their major league roster on Monday morning, trading LHP Brooks Raley to the Phillies for two prospects - 27th-ranked prospect OF John Spikerman and RHP Luke Gabrysh (unranked).
Raley, 38, has a 1.96 ERA in 45 appearances for the Mets this season while earning $4.75 million. He missed most of the 2024 season and much of the 2025 season after requiring Tommy John surgery on his left elbow, but has made a successful return to the big leagues late in his career. He had a 2.30 ERA in 149 appearances over four seasons with the Mets, and can become a free agent at the end of the 2026 season.
Raley was originally acquired during the winter meetings in 2022 in a trade for minor leaguer Keyshawn Askew, and re-signed with the Mets at the end of the 2024 season while he worked his way back from elbow surgery.
As for the return, the Mets get Spikerman, 23, the Phillies’ third-round selection in the 2024 first-year player draft. He has appeared in only 32 games in the minor leagues this season while hitting .252/.423/.330 with no home runs, 11 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. He missed a month due to an ankle injury. They also got Gabrysh, 23, the Phillies’ 15th-round selection in the 2024 first-year player draft. He has struggled at High-A this season, allowing 11 home runs in 68.1 IP with a 5.14 ERA in 18 appearances, and 17 starts, although he does have 89 strikeouts this season.
It’s worth mentioning the Phillies farm system is generally weak on talent, so it’s unclear if Spikerman will be among the top 30 ranked prospects in the Mets system, which is still considered strong despite losing two top 100 prospects in their trade that brought in Freddy Peralta earlier this year. As such, it can be argued this is a weaker-than-desired return for Raley, who will unquestionably add value to a Phillies bullpen that has struggled to the tune of a 4.40 ERA this season, the sixth-worst in the sport.
The Mets will now look to possibly deal Clay Holmes, Luke Weaver, Tyrone Taylor, Luis Robert Jr., and perhaps Kodai Senga ahead of tonight’s 6 p.m. trade deadline.
