BREAKING: Mets re-sign RHP Ryne Stanek to one-year contract
The Mets have made another addition to their bullpen, re-signing Ryne Stanek.
As rumors around Pete Alonso continue to swirl, the Mets remain active in fortifying the rest of their team through free agency, making their third signing in less than two weeks.
New York has reportedly re-signed right-handed reliever Ryne Stanek to a one-year contract, reportedly in the $4 to $5 million range. The deal was first reported by MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo, with the salary coming from SNY’s Andy Martino.
This comes as an interesting turn of events, as The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal had previously reported that Stanek appeared to be close to signing with the Detroit Tigers early on Wednesday.
Stanek is the second notable acquisition for the Mets bullpen this offseason as the club inked left-handed pitcher A.J. Minter to a two-year contract just 12 days prior.
The 33-year-old reliever had a largely up-and-down season split between the Mariners and Mets last year. Overall, Stanek pitched to a 4.88 ERA last season and had a 6.06 ERA after being acquired by the Mets. While Stanek struggled mightily at times in the regular season, he really stepped it up for this club in the playoffs where he pitched to a 3.24 ERA over seven appearances and became the Mets second-most reliable reliever in October.
Stanek comes with a lot of postseason experience from his days with the Astros, which showed up for New York last season when the lights were at their brightest. Despite his struggles in the regular season, Stanek brings a fiery attitude to the table and still throws hard and can miss bats effectively when he is on.
The Mets now appear to have a fairly formidable bullpen having added Stanek and Minter to the fold alongside Edwin Díaz, José Buttó and Dedniel Núñez, among others.
Ryne the Roadie (I mean, let's face it, he looks like he should be hauling gear for Lynyrd Skynyrd -- and I'm cool with it) is back. Very good. He can really bring it, and he don't scare easy. Just what you want coming out of the 'pen: some good ol' country hardball.
Love this signing!
