BREAKING: Mets calling up Jonah Tong
The Mets are bringing their fourth-ranked prospect and the 44th ranked prospect in baseball to the major leagues
The Mets are bringing another top pitching prospect to the major leagues.
According to The Athletic, the Mets will be promoting RHP Jonah Tong to the major leagues.
Tong, 22, has emerged as the top-ranked pitching prospect in the Mets minor league system, according to MLB.com. Tong is the 44th-ranked prospect in all of baseball after a quick ascent through the minor leagues. He has arguably been the most dominant pitcher in the minor leagues in 2025, combining to pitch to a 1.58 ERA in 113.2 IP over 22 starts between Double-A Binghamton and Triple-A Syracuse in 2025. He has walked 47 batters with 179 strikeouts while mostly at Double-A Binghamton. He was recently promoted to Triple-A Syracuse, during which he has made two starts while allowing just eight hits and three walks with 17 strikeouts over 11.2 IP.
With the Mets continuing to struggle to get length out of their veteran starting pitchers, the Mets are turning to both Tong and Nolan McLean to hopefully provide such length and inject some youthful energy to a rotation badly in need of multiple layers of consistency.
The Mets have posted a 4.97 ERA since June 13, the fourth-worst mark in all of baseball. Their starting pitchers have pitched to a 4.99 ERA during the same span, the sixth-worst mark in the game, and have thrown just 288.2 IP over 62 games during that span, the lowest number in baseball.
The Mets drafted Tong in the seventh round of the 2022 amateur draft. He has a lifetime 2.54 ERA in 57 appearances and 53 starts in three seasons in the minor leagues. He began the 2024 season pitching for Single-A St. Lucie and has quickly climbed the minor league ladder that year, reaching Double-A Binghamton in the same season. He has now jumped two levels to reach the major leagues and has helped earn the Mets the top-ranked farm system in all of baseball, according to ESPN.
Tong will start Friday against the Marlins.
McLean tomorrow and Tong on Friday! Oh baby!
This kid is gonna slay and I can’t wait to watch him.
