Wow! It's a one year rental, mighty interesting. Looking like next year is an "all-in" situation what with Bichette being able to opt out and Peralta (and I think Holmes) FA after '26. I think extending Peralta is a must, rather than just an option. Not many better starters than him. I think most agree that Sproat won't be a star but might have a nice career ahead of him. Jett Williams is a wild card. But Mr. Baron is right, Benge and AJ Ewing allow them to make this deal.

I feel much better about 2026 after today.

Seems like a steep cost. Still feel like overall we're worse than last year..I'm bitter though, nothing will justify letting Pete and Nimmo go. I don't have anyone I care enough about. Team full of mercenaries now

Cici Peacock's avatar

I agree, Justin. Lets say for the sake of argument we used to have 6 things tp address. Letting Pete, Diaz, and Nimmo go just meant we had 9 things to address instead of 6. To my mind's eye, the math didn't math. We aren't better now at 1B or closing pitcher. I would only say Bo > Brandon. The new pitcher we just got only pitched 6 innings once last year. So now we have new guy, ghost and sean; 3 pitchers that will leave the mound after 4-5 innings.

Justin Castaldo's avatar

Absolutely! We are not better. We needed a few things but just made it worse and just refilled but with lesser players. I was really excited about Stearns be he doesn't know what he's doing.

Cici Peacock's avatar

He's a 30-something kid from a very small market with zero baseball playing experience. He doesn't belong in a massive city with almost unlimited budget. LA is the role model of a big city club that spends. They spent and actually made over $1B net profit in 2025. We spent and lost $100M in 2025. Tale of two cities.

I feel like we’re better. People continue to forget we had the 3rd worst record in the majors with this core group from June on

Cici Peacock's avatar

I don't think Alonso or Diaz were replaced by anything even close to equivalent. The other positions have all been improved; though not enough to compete with Philadelphia or Los Angeles.

Justin Castaldo's avatar

That was mostly because of pitching. Immediately letting Pete and diaz walk made us so much worse

The 2026 looks a whole lot better. We may have to repeat this for 2027 due to this contract, and the opt-out for Bo.

But let's concentrate on 2026, the 40th anniversary of the 1986 WS Mets. When I was 25.

I'm gonna cry now. Old man tears!

Joel's avatar

Haha, don't get me started! Every week someone who was a big star when I was a kid passes away. Last week it was Phil Goyette.

I had the identical discouraging experience. One quote I like is, "The days and weeks are the same as they always were--it's the years that fly by".

Peter Mat's avatar

Ella sang what a difference a day makes. Stearns can sing what a difference a week makes! And one might begin to wonder what else this poker player has up his sleeve? I admire his ability to take all the flak shot out there from the emotional and often times irrational public. It probably takes a gritty New Yorker like himself to put his head down and grind it out. Anyone not think that they are not in the mix fore 2026 now?

Joel's avatar

They are for sure. I'm happy about the upswing but it was still a blunder to let Diaz go and Alonso 5yrs 165M looks at this point like a reasonable deal.

Cici Peacock's avatar

What a dumb trade. Sproat for a one year rental? Stearns is a fucking imbecile. JFC.

Dan V's avatar

Before the trade, Sproat was 8th or 9th on the SP depth chart. Peralta will be #1 on the depth chart - is a proven winner and cy young candidate with playoff experience and a very cheap $8M contract. Sproat has plenty of potential - but his arm could explode tomorrow and that would be that. If Peralta walks, the Mets get a draft company pick. It’s a good trade.

Declan's avatar

Well, it is eyebrow raising.. We shall see....it better work out

Joel's avatar

What's this about Tobias Myers coming over?

Texas Gus's avatar

Myers is part of the deal. Seems the Brewers didn’t want to play hardball with Stearns, despite the pressure they knew he was under.

Kevin J. Rogers's avatar

Myers is a great get. I wasn't expecting that. I figured the deal would just be for Peralta.

Now the question is LF. Do we sit tight and see if Benge can win the job in Spring Training? Or is there another move on the chess board.

Intriguing.

Joel's avatar

I was thinking the hope was for Baty to be based in left and rotate in the infield when Bichette or Semien take a day off. Otherwise, Baty's buried. Again, I don't want them to get Bader or Nootbaar. Maybe Taylor plays left now and then.

Kevin J. Rogers's avatar

Baty is a really interesting case now. I'm not sure what's going to happen with him. He has the potential to be another McNeil, someone who can play a couple infield spots and some corner outfield. Or he could get penciled in at LF. Or he could move as part of a package for another upgrade.

Vientos is another really interesting case. He can't really play anywhere other than 3B, and he's the third option there (or fourth, if Ronny Mauricio makes the team). He can DH, but other than that, he may be another piece on the move.

But I don't see either of them moving for Nootbar, to be honest. And re-signing Taylor almost certainly means Bader is out of the picture.

James Schwartz's avatar

Peralta only pitched into the 6th Inning twice last year. I’m fine with the trade. Just sayin’. Aren’t we looking for a stud lockdown guy still? Meaning Skubal?

Joel's avatar

Let's not get greedy!

James Schwartz's avatar

Yes, we absolutely should LA has and they want a fight. Let the Mets be the ones to give it to them. LFGM

Kevin J. Rogers's avatar

I don't even want to think about Skubal's contract if the current system stays in place. He'll definitely land between Soto and Ohtani and above Tucker in terms of AAV.

That's a lot of scratch for a guy who's one pitch away from missing a year and a half, the way every pitcher is.

Dan V's avatar

Interesting point, although I have a feeling he’ll get a longer term deal in the range of 5-7 years that takes him to his age 35-37 seasons…at about $45-50M a year (beating Wheeler’s current high AAV of $42M but not coming close to Shohei for obvious reasons). If somebody wanted to do 7/$350 that would give him the highest AAV and total value among all starters (excluding Ohtani). Given the potential impact of the CBA, I think it’s reasonable.

Could I see Stearns and Cohen getting creative and giving him a $100M signing bonus to reduce the years to 5? Sure - but I could also see them having to add that to the 7/$350 just to get him to sign (making it 7/$450).

Kevin J. Rogers's avatar

That's about the range I was thinking. Under the current CBA, the bidding for Skubal would start at about $50 million AAV. Only a handful of teams could be in on that, and only a couple could go north of there with a term and be able to eat it if he blows his arm out.

How far they would bid each other up is the question. I'm sure Skubal himself figures he's worth at least Kyle Tucker money. And I'm sure he'd get it.
