Inability to turn the double play cost the Mets. Plus relievers inability to get first guy out.
It would be a mistake to call up Sproat. He has shown that he needs time to adjust to new surroundings, a new role. Not saying he wont be ready come next year, but a month ago might have been better. Dont have time for him to struggle for three appearances now. Tong on the other hand, might be the guy. Why the Mets pushed the start, since everyone has got used to pitching with the extra days rest.. Now you Senga, not at his best already, pitching on regular rest.
Once again Mets handling of staff is baffling.
And add Frankie Montas to the Jed Lowrie list of players signed who contributed less than nothing to the team.
It's hard to sweep, especially when you have to win that Sunday afternoon game. Not a total excuse, but that's how it is. The Mets did win 2/3 and the Reds lost 2/3. Gained a game.
Still, come on. It's time to come back and win after being down late. Had a prime opportunity there.
If my memory serves me correctly, 3 of the 4 Braves runs were pushed into scoring position because of walks and a hit batter ... and 2 singles was all it took after that. Too many freebies.
David Petersen is now the ace of the Mets staff. He was cruising yesterday keeping his pitch count down and had he not tired and lost the strike zone he could’ve gone 8. I know I know it didn’t happen but he’s the guy who takes the ball every 5th day and gives the pen a rest albeit compared to the rest of the league it doesn’t seem like much but 7 innings compared to almost 5 it’s been a big deal for this team. I’d say David Stearns is listening to the fans now. We have screamed and clamored for the kids to come up and pitch. If the team was cruising this wouldn’t have even happened but here we are and it’s mostly a need now but what have we been saying since July and earlier? Yup, let’s see these kids. I’d say us fans ain’t a stupid as every front office thinks we are. Vientos? It’s about time but I need to see it until the season ends to pencil him in anywhere next year and Puhlease don’t say he is our first baseman if they let Pete walk. I cringe seeing a glove on his hand. Groundhog Day again.
Of course. Yet he went from saying we probably wouldn’t see any of these kids up here this year to possibly all 3 now? Not really a bad choice really but this guy believes he’s the smartest in the room so what changes his mind?
Every GM in every pro sport thinks he's the smartest in the room. What changed his mind? I have no idea but maybe what he continued to see on the field, on the big team and AAA, and is content enough in his own skin to reverse course. Maybe.
Bases loaded, Pete we need a hit, not a dinger. Not Peterson at his best, but still only gave up 2 runs. The bullpen guys acquired at the trade deadline that were raved about overall have fallen short.
David ran out of gas in the sixth, but he pitched good enough to win. This one hung on the little things, especially not getting Albies on the double play. The feed from Mauricio was just a little soft, and Baty didn't get enough on the turn to nip a fast runner.
I don't blame Brett, by the way. It's not his position (Acuña has a much better gun and may have gotten him — but I've said my piece on Luisangel). It's just one of those game of inches things.
Still, complete that double play and we might have gotten our sweep.
Now we have it all to do against Philadelphia. This is it. If we're going to get over the hump, it's these three games. I don't think we can catch them. But it hardly matters at this point. What matters is showing we truly belong in the postseason.
It’s great to see Vientos looking like it’s 2024. I’m not sure Nimmo coming back is a positive. Pete needs to start hitting again. Why doesn’t Taylor play CF when he’s in the game? I think he catches Profar’s hit. Sproat got rocked yesterday so Tong is looking like the next call up. Maybe Ross too to replace Garrett or Stanek?
Mendoza said, per the booth, that Taylor is experienced in LF while Mullins is not and he would rather not move Mullins to a position (LF) he is unfamiliar with. 'Baseball-Reference' states that Mullins, in his 8 major league seasons, has only played LF in 5 games, (12 innings) starting in only 1, and the most recent LF games were in 2020. The booth was divided on Mendoza's thinking but I do not remember who was with him and who was not.

If David Stearns is making moves because he is listening to the fans now, this franchise is doomed.

Alonso was terrible yesterday. Everyone is afraid to call him out when he is bad. And there have been too many games just like this one.
