I'm definitely in let's convince Green to stay camp. If he decides to go back to his day job, I understand and wouldn't blame him (being on the road and away from the family is hard). With that said the next manager I think would have to be an experienced one. Not saying Cora necessarily but someone with a few years of management. But I think we all can see the writing on the wall and Beltran will be crowned.
Vientos has had his chances and a new town would do wonders for him. Besides he is very one dimensional, he is a born dh. Baty is weird, hot streak then cold streak followed by a colder streak then a flash of talent. And as for Alvarez I was a huge fan for the first three years and now I have started to lose my patience. If its not the injuries which are often and many, its the lack of focus and follow through on good baseball habits. But there aren't many, if any, with his pop out there. Keep him but demote him to back up duties and hopefully that will wake him up. Side note, if Bichette opts out can the Mets roster afford to carry a rookie (Rojas and/or Amick) while having two players in their sophomore year?
I agree with you on Thornton and Green. The Mets should do whatever they can to keep Green as a manager. He seems to motivate the players and is good with developing the young players and the Mets have a good group of young players. I am impressed with Thornton; he has a good set of pitches that he locates well and seems to be consistent. He should be penciled into the rotation for 2027.
I am not sure what to think about Baty, Vientos, and Alvarez. They don’t seem to be developing.
- I’ve been able to watch the last 3 games and Baty looks lost at the plate. His plus is that he can play multiple positions but he is not great at any of them. Does he deserve one more shot?
- The challenge with Vientos is his great 2024 and he was a stud in the playoffs. He hasn’t been able to replicate that plus he is weak defensively. Was 2024 a fluke? Maybe another team would be willing to invest in Vientos based on his 2024 performance.
- Speaking of lost at the plate, Alvarez can’t hit a breaking ball and seems to be late on fast balls. His defense is suspect and he made 2 bad challenges in the first game of the Phillies series. Could he improve his hitting and defense with some good coaching? Is he coachable? Maybe give him one more year.
I wouldn't mind if they said bye and good luck to all three players you cited.
I am somewhat wary of exposing Torrens as a full-time catcher. Still, Alvarez is aggravating. Boy Genius can find someone to replace him, hopefully.
Soto did what he could not in Game 1. Curious losing pitcher. Guy went a third of an inning. They would have been better off, probably, just to let the other guy start the game. He went 4.2.
Not quite the same situation, but darn if the White Sox aren't giving me flashbacks. They keep on blowing leads. Last night was painful. I hope they get in.
I am not going into the offseason hoping they get Skubal. It will be a killer contract. They have multiple needs. A good, reliable starter (btw Holmes lost last night) and maybe a toss-in would be fine. The kids with SM as a swing guy will provide the rest.
I'm all for hiring Green. My enthusiasm for Thornton is tempered by our experience with Peterson who imo is a similar pitcher. Peterson has has several stretches where he's been an excellent pitcher (all star in '25 with a 3.06 ERA), but the Mets ended up trading him for peanuts this year. He's pitched well but for one outing for the Cubs. For sure, Thornton's in the rotation but let's cross our fingers he can duplicate his performance next year. Interestingly, his stats this year are better in the majors than the minors. Next: why did it take them so long to call up Mauricio?
I agree about Andy Green. His success goes beyond those saying, "They're only succeeding now because the pressure is off." I hope he makes the best decision for himself and his family.
I listened to Howie last night, partly because I am not sure if the Mets will win the next two days and I wanted to hear at least one more "Put it in the books."
Finally. Mike Bruhert! Mike Bruhert. I consider myself a Mets savant but that name stumped me. It shouldn't have. The most famous Christ the King graduate to play in New York until Jose Alvarado came along.
Look the one thing people aren’t talking about. There is very likely going to be a lockout, followed by the installment of a hard salary cap.
The Mets will not be able to buy their way out of their shortcomings.
I don’t think Bichette will opt out because he seems to like it here and no one is paying him close to what the Mets will.
Rojas ia getting called up - will likely play second (or swap with Bichette at third). Baty will stick as a utility player. First is still a hole. I know he isn’t a good defensive catcher but I can see Alvarez going to first next year - unless they are willing to give voit some time there.

I say it's time to say goodbye to Vientos and Baty but give Alvarez one more year. If Bichette leaves, we're in trouble.

Stand-alone comment.

Alvarez needs to go. You’d think a catcher would have a good understanding of the strike zone, but he definitely does not.

THanks, Andrew. Great post today.
