I’m sitting in the Adirondacks with a snow covered landscape and minus 25 degrees out. It’s the farthest thing from baseball here, but that’s why we have all the media forms. My level of optimism this year is best described as cautious. For me, if the pitching improves and sustains itself, we have a shot. Nothing else will be enough. As always, results are the only thing that matters-the exception, perhaps, being a truly rebuilding team-which they are not. But in this age of free agency, is there really a rebuilding team..or just one unwilling or unable to spend?
I'm not far from you, in Southern Saratoga County. At 4 a.m. today my phone said it was -9° F outside without the wind chill. YIKES!
Anyway, I think we're more than willing to spend. We're just being careful to do it without closing any doors.
Maybe part of that is Uncle Stevie getting torched on the Scherzer and Verlander deals, especially. I know if my feet were under his desk, I'd be thinking, "Okay, let's be a lot smarter from now on."
And there's no denying Stearns is smart. That's why Cohen brought him in.
"...if my feet were under his desk", nice, that's a new one for me. Btw, I don't think the Mets' moves were as finely calculated as Mr. Baron suggests. The expectations of 3 guys adapting to positions they never played (Polanco, Baty, and Bichette) is a bit much and doesn't bespeak careful planning.
Isn’t this team resembling Milwaukee with more expensive players? The Brewers had very good fielders all around the diamond and won 97 games last season. They didn’t do dick in the playoffs which is what concerns me here but I believe Robert finds his love for the game again being in a winning atmosphere along with some superstars he will want to measure up to in his mind and if that equals games played with little injury time missed and say 30 HRs? That’ll look like a steal of the off season. Does Semien have a resurgence in that bat? One can hope. It does happen right? There are always questions marks befor the season begins for EVERY team except the Dodgers I guess. I’m just looking forward to baseball baby. LGM!
I suppose you could say that. But I never like to say "this team is like the Brewers," or "this reminds me of the 1984 Mets," etc. There are never any direct comparisons that can be made in my opinion. Each team is different from year-to-year. Even the Dodgers are going to be different than they were last year. The question will always be, is different better?
I could have phrased that better saying the defense philosophy of the Brewers and I guess you could also say putting the ball in play too. It seems this team can be more exciting this season. I’m not saying small ball entirely but I like that over just hoping to smash HRs.
That's the way I see it — it's less about being the Brewers with more money than having a particular philosophy of the game and executing it.
And I happen to share that philosophy. Give me a lineup with a bunch of consistent hitters with some pop and one big gun to anchor it, a rotation with a solid starter going out there every day, a deep bullpen and a lot of leather in the field, and I'll make a run.
I like where we are. If we stay healthy, we're in good shape. If both Semien and Robert hit to the upside, we're in really good shape.
If Alvie and Brett pick up where they left off, Swaggy finds it again, and everyone else matches the back of their baseball card, we're starting to look like a contender.
The big question, as always, is pitching, especially starting pitching. But I like where we are there, too. If we pencil in Peralta for 32 starts, that means the other five guys start 26 games apiece, on average.
That could potentially put us in a fantastic place.

Cardinals come to mind.
