Play of the Game 🌟
Jared Young home run?! Jared Young home run!
After getting called up by the club over the weekend, journeyman utility player Jared Young – who, thanks to some injuries, has started at DH in recent days – made his first mark with the Mets.
In the bottom of the first in a game tied at two apiece, Young hit a rocket out to deep right field and over the wall for a two-run home run to give the Mets a 4-2 lead. For Young, it was his first hit as a member of the Mets and just the third home run of his major league career.
More on Young later in the newsletter…

Who the heck is Jared Young?! ✍️
If you knew that Jared Young was in this organization entering this season – congratulations, you’re officially a Mets sicko.
Hell, if you knew that Young was in the organization as recently as four days ago, you deserve some credit for being on top of things. But after the show that he put on for the Flushing faithful on Tuesday night, something tells me that Mets fans are paying attention now.
In his fourth start since getting called up by the team over the weekend, Young burst onto the scene by going 2-for-3 at the plate with a home run, a double, and two runs driven in. The knocks were the first for Young as a member of the Mets, and the home run was just the third of his major league career.
Young’s signing largely flew under the radar in an offseason that revolved around the organization’s pursuit of star players and reunions with some fan favorites. New York signed Young to a major league deal on December 16th, just eight days after the club signed Juan Soto to his record deal.
Young, who had spent the majority of his eight-year career in the minor leagues and the KBO last season, had a very slight chance to break camp with the club this past spring, but the deck was already stacked against him even after the Mets lost both Nick Madrigal and Jeff McNeil to injury.
On the bright side, Young did get featured in some social media content that the team put together during that time.
As the season got closer, the club ultimately optioned him to Triple-A Syracuse, where he has looked quite good at the plate after arriving into the organization with advertised pop. Over 26 games, Young was batting .272/.393/.533 with six home runs, six doubles, 23 RBI, 18 runs scored, and a .925 OPS in the minor leagues before getting called up. And last season, he had a 1.038 OPS with 10 home runs in only 38 games with the Doosan Bears in the KBO.
Ultimately, who knows how long Young’s stint with this club will last – a lot of that will be contingent on the recovery of Jesse Winker, who has not resumed baseball activities after straining his oblique, and whether or not the team wants to call up Ronny Mauricio anytime soon – but regardless of that, it’s pretty cool to see this guy have a moment.
It’s been a long journey for Young throughout his professional career, which started in the Cubs farm system back in the 2017 season. Since then, Young has spent time with the Cardinals and in the KBO League overseas. Prior to his recent stint in New York, the journeyman had appeared in just 22 major league games with the Cubs between 2022-23, where he posted a .725 OPS and 98 OPS+ in limited action of 75 sporadic plate appearances.
For Young, this is an awesome opportunity for him to carve himself a spot on this roster and salvage something out of a career that has traveled down a long, winding path. Maybe that’s what he’ll ultimately be for this team, or perhaps it’ll be more of a short-lived moment à la Nick Plummer in 2022.
And whether it lasts for the rest of the season or maybe only a couple more days, it’s pretty awesome to see. Hell yeah, Jared Young.
Around the League 🚩
Dodgers DH Shohei Ohtani became the first player in the league to reach 20 home runs this season in LA’s 9-5 win over the Guardians
Astros DH Jose Altuve recorded four hits and two home runs in the club’s 11-1 blowout win vs the A’s
The Phillies, on the backs of Ranger Suárez’s six strong innings, shutout the Braves in a 2-0 victory
Cubs 3B Matt Shaw delivered a walk-off single in the 11th inning to defeat the Rockies, 4-3
Great wrap-up as always. The pace numbers for the offense are a great inclusion. Obviously the pitching staff is worthy of all the flowers. I am an optimist as a fan, no ifs ands or buts; however, if you told me that the offense was going to be this chronically moribund through the first 1/3 of the year, I would have guessed that the 25 Mets would find themselves in a similar hole to the 24 squad. What a job all around by the staff. I’m a believer in water seeking its own level and the offense should progress to the mean. If the pitching staff can be near this level, bolstered by Manaea and Montas, the team has a shot to be a no-doubt playoff squad. Pretty amazin’ work by the hurlers and Stearns!
Thank you!
